Pilot Agreement Definitions
ACCRUED VACATION ▸
means vacation a Pilot accrues in the current year that may be used the next year
ACTIVE SERVICE ▸
The period of time that begins on a Pilot's most recent date of hire as a Pilot and continues until resignation, termination, furlough, or as set forth in Section 13 (Leaves of Absence).
ACTUAL BLOCK HOURS ▸
Actual time from Block Out to Block In
ADD ▸
Sequence or Reserve Day or RDP a Pilot voluntarily elects to place on his schedule from Open Time or the Premium Add Folder
AGGRESSIVE RESERVE ▸
The process that allows an eligible Reserve Pilot to bid for Sequences on his Reserve Days or RDPs one (1) hour after Daily Open Time closes and prior to Reserve assignment, in accordance with Section 25.T.7
AVERAGE LINE VALUE (ALV) ▸
The number of hours (including both Pay Credit hours and Virtual Credit hours) published by the Company prior to the opening of the monthly bid that is the projected average of all Regular Line PBS awards for a Category in a Monthly Bid Period
BASE MONTH or MAY GO ▸
The calendar month a Pilot is due for training as defined by the FARs. Training may also occur in the month prior to the Base Month or in The Late Grace Month
BLOCK IN ▸
The time at which an aircraft reaches a destination (generally, at a gate), the parking brake is set and a door is opened
BLOCK OUT ▸
Time at which an aircraft's parking brake is released and all doors are closed for departure
BLOCK TIME or BLOCK ▸
The time elapsed from Block Out to Block In
CALENDAR DAY or DAY ▸
The twenty-four (24) hour period commencing at 0001 and ending at 2400 hours Local Time
CANCELLATION ▸
Any scheduled flight which does not operate for any reason
CAPTAIN ▸
Pilot who is in command of the aircraft, responsible for the aircraft and crew while on-duty, properly qualified and designated by the Company, and who holds currently effective airman certificates authorizing such Pilot to serve as Captain and act as pilot-in-command
CATEGORY ▸
Seat and equipment (e.g., Airbus 320 Captain)
CDO LINE ▸
Line of flying consisting of only CDO Sequences
CHECK AIRMAN / LINE CHECK PILOT / LCP ▸
A Pilot designated by the Company and approved by the FAA to examine other Pilots to determine proficiency and competency
CONTINUOUS DUTY OVERNIGHT (CDO) ▸
A scheduled Duty Period which begins in one Calendar Day and ends in the following Calendar Day which includes an overnight stay out of Domicile that is scheduled for less than FAR-required minimum rest
CORRECT LINE ▸
The initial line the Pilot should have been awarded had a PBS misaward not occurred
DAILY DROP LIMIT (DDL) ▸
The limit on the number of Duty Periods that may be Dropped on a given day; the limit will include all Duty Periods operating that day
DAY OFF ▸
Calendar Day free from all duty with the Company which occurs in a Pilot's Domicile
DEADHEAD ▸
Transportation at Company direction (not local in character) to or from a duty assignment
DENIAL MODE ▸
A step in PBS used when the system can’t build a schedule that meets all preferences; it relaxes “avoid” preferences one at a time to keep a legal schedule within credit window
DISPLACEMENT / DISPLACED ▸
A Pilot no longer has sufficient seniority to hold his current Position pursuant to Section 24
DOMICILE ▸
A geographic location where Pilots are based and the location from which Sequences are constructed to start and finish
DROP ▸
A Sequence, Reserve Day, or RDP voluntarily removed from a schedule resulting in a deduction in Pay Credit
DUTY PERIOD ▸
The period from scheduled Report Time until fifteen (15) minutes after actual Block In for domestic flights and thirty (30) minutes for international flights
EARNED VACATION ▸
Unused vacation a Pilot has accrued the previous year for use in the current year
EFFECTIVE DATE ▸
The date when a Pilot's Hourly Rate changes as a result of a change in Position or Domicile
ELECTRONIC BID SYSTEM ▸
An internet-based method for Pilots to access and modify their schedules; the system is FLICA
EXTENDED / EXTENSION ▸
A Reserve assignment not in accordance with Section 25.R.4
FILL TO THRESHOLD ▸
A tool in PBS utilized prior to Denial Mode to continue awarding Sequences until the Threshold is met
FINAL LINE CHECK ▸
The line check that qualifies the Pilot to be released to the line
FIRST OFFICER ▸
A Pilot who is second-in-command of the aircraft
FLIGHT TIME ▸
Total time from Block Out to Block In for scheduling and pay purposes
FOOTPRINT ▸
The time between originally scheduled Sequence Report Time and Release Time
GOLDEN DAYS ▸
Days chosen by a Pilot on which no training can be assigned
GROUND TRAINING ▸
All training conducted in a classroom or non-flight environment
HARD LINE or REGULAR LINE ▸
A line that includes only Sequences and Days Off and is not a Reserve Line
HISTORICAL LINE VALUE ▸
The twelve (12)-month rolling average of ALV
HOURLY RATE ▸
The rate of pay applicable to a Pilot
INCENTIVE CREDIT ▸
Additional Pay Credit time added to a Sequence or assignment for premium pay, training, or other contractual purposes
INSTRUCTOR PILOT ▸
A Pilot assigned by the Company to provide simulator or ground training
KNOWN ABSENCE ▸

LINEHOLDER ▸
A Pilot who holds a Hard Line
LONG CALL RESERVE (LCR) ▸
A Reserve Pilot whose RAP begins at least twelve (12) hours after notification of assignment
MANAGEMENT PILOT (MGT) ▸
A Pilot employed in a management or training capacity who may retain limited line-flying duties
MINIMUM DAY (MD) ▸
The minimum number of Pay Credit hours a Pilot receives for a Duty Period regardless of actual Block Time
MONTHLY BID PERIOD (MBP) ▸
A calendar month or published bid month used for bidding Lines, Reserves, and Vacation
OPEN TIME ▸
A Sequence, Reserve Day, or RDP not assigned or awarded during bidding and available for pickup
PAY CREDIT ▸
A unit of pay multiplied by a Pilot’s Hourly Rate
PBS (Preferential Bidding System) ▸
The computerized bidding system used by the Company to construct monthly schedules

PROJECTION WINDOW ▸
The time frame used by PBS to calculate projected credit in building a schedule
READY RESERVE (RR) ▸
A Reserve Pilot physically present in the airport prepared for immediate assignment
REGULAR LINE ▸
A published line of flying consisting of Sequences and Days Off
RELEASE TIME ▸
The actual time a Pilot is released from duty following completion of his last flight or assignment
REPORT TIME ▸
The scheduled time a Pilot is required to report for duty
RESERVE (General) ▸
A Pilot awarded or assigned Reserve status for a given Monthly Bid Period
RESERVE CALL OUT ▸
Notification by Crew Scheduling assigning a Reserve Pilot to a specific Sequence or Duty Period

THRESHOLD ▸
The projected credit target used by PBS for building schedules
TRAINING CENTER ▸
The Company-designated facility for ground, simulator, or qualification training
TRAINING PAY (TRP) ▸

UPGRADE TRAINING (UPG) ▸

VACATION STRETCH DAY (VSP/VSU) ▸
A day immediately before or after a vacation period that a Pilot may request off as paid (VSP) or unpaid (VSU)
VIRTUAL CREDIT ▸
Three (3) hours assigned to each Day of a Known Absence
WINDOW ▸
A time period associated with a Short Call Reserve’s RDPs
ACARS ▸
Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System used for digital communication between cockpit and ground.
ALV (Average Line Value) ▸
The projected average of all regular line awards in a category for a given month.
APPLICABLE PAY RATE ▸
The Hourly Rate that applies to a Pilot’s category, seat, and longevity for the purpose of pay computation.
AWARD ▸
The result given by PBS or a bid process granting a line, reserve pattern, vacation, or training month.
BID PACKAGE ▸
The published collection of monthly lines, reserve patterns, and related information used for bidding.
BID PERIOD ▸
The designated time window during which Pilots may submit or modify bids in PBS or for vacations.
CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) ▸
The contract between the Company and the Pilot group represented by ALPA defining working conditions, pay, and benefits.
COMPANY BUSINESS (COM) ▸
An assignment performed at Company direction not associated with line flying, e.g., meetings or training.
COURT SUMMONS (CRT) ▸
Authorized absence from duty for mandatory court appearance; documentation required.
CREW TRACKING ▸
Department responsible for real-time management of Pilot assignments, irregular ops, and schedule recovery.
DAY BLOCK (TRB) ▸
A designated day reserved for training events in a Pilot’s monthly schedule.
DEQUAL (D/Q) ▸
Loss of qualification in a specific equipment or seat requiring reassignment or training.
DISPLACEMENT TRAINING (D/P) ▸
Training provided to a displaced Pilot moving to another equipment or seat.
FAMILY LEAVE (FLA/FLS/FLV) ▸
Authorized unpaid or paid leave related to family care, sickness, or vacation substitution.
FUNERAL LEAVE (FNN/FNR) ▸
Authorized absence for bereavement; paid or unpaid according to Section 12.
HALF DAY SICK (HSK) ▸
Paid sick leave for a partial calendar day when a full sick day is not required.
JURY DUTY (JUR) ▸
Company-paid leave while serving on a jury; Pilot must provide proof of service.
LEAVE OF ABSENCE (LOA) ▸
Authorized absence from active service for medical, personal, or military reasons as defined in Section 13.
LINE CHECK PILOT (LCP) ▸
A Check Airman qualified to administer line checks and operating experience evaluations.
MEDICAL LEAVE (MED/MLS/MLV/MNA) ▸
Authorized leave due to medical reasons; may be paid (sick or VAC) or unpaid depending on status.
MILITARY LEAVE (MIL) ▸
Authorized leave to fulfill military obligations per federal law and Section 13.
MGT DISPLACED PILOT (M/P) ▸
Management Pilot disqualified from management duties returning to line service.
MISSED TRIP (M/T) ▸
Failure to report for a trip assignment resulting in possible discipline or pay loss.
NO SHOW (NSO) ▸
Failure to report for duty without prior notification to Crew Scheduling.
ON THE JOB INJURY (OJI) ▸
Absence due to injury occurring during duty; handled per workers’ compensation rules.
OUT OF SERVICE PAID (HSP) ▸
Administrative paid time when Pilot not available for line flying at Company request.
OUT OF SERVICE UNPAID (HSU) ▸
Administrative unpaid time when Pilot unavailable for duty and not covered by other codes.
PILOT DISPLACEMENT DUE TO BASE MOVE (DOD/DOM) ▸
Paid (DOD) or unpaid (DOM) day off associated with involuntary or voluntary base movement.
POTABLE WATER SERVICE REQUEST (PWSR) ▸
A flight-crew-initiated request for potable water servicing of an aircraft.
RESERVE NO FLY (RNF) ▸
Reserve Pilot not assigned to fly but remaining on pay guarantee for the period.
REMOVE PENDING PAPER (RPP) ▸
Temporary administrative code used until paperwork is processed or corrected.
RSA BLOCKHOLDER (RSA) ▸
Pilot holding a RSA reserve line or assignment under the RSA category.
RVA–RVE OPEN TIME (RVA/RVB/RVC/RVD/RVE) ▸
Codes used for open-time reserve assignments A–E corresponding to various coverage blocks.
SIMULATOR ON DAY OFF (SM1) ▸
Simulator event scheduled on a Pilot’s Day Off; may be paid or reserve-credited (S1/SR).
